Commodifiable Photography Remix 2023 “Commodifiable Photography Remix” is a collage project that de/re constructs photography auction catalogs. These cut and pasted images sell for thousands of dollars on the secondary market. Each piece’s contents come from one auction catalog only, and this confine presents empirical evidence about what was socially or monetarily valuable at the time of the sale. We are presented with a time capsule exposing who could work as a photographer and how individuals were portrayed in relation to their identities. It is clear who and what is perceived as beauty, and photography is a tool for setting and normalizing these values. I observe, state, and challenge the capitalistic system that enables photographers to sell their work for so much, and I highlight the kind of exploitative imagery that has impacted our society.
