I want to enlighten you all about a topical set of issues that has been brought to my #hamtention after Krissy Clark's @popupmagazine segment. She was discussing odd regulations - laws that may seem quirky, odd, silly, or even unnecessary. One was specifically about sexual pig odor, or #boarTaint. If pigs smell like sex, it's against the law to sell them. Clearly, I was intrigued. Boar taint is an unpleasant oder that occurs in some male pigs as they hit puberty and develop sex hormones. The smell causes pigs to be unpalatable and therefore unsellable, the dilemma mentioned in the video above. Castration can help prevent the occurrence of boar taint, as it eliminates the ability to produce the hormones primarily responsible for the smell: andosterone and skatole. My concerns are, for one, that castration and suppression of development are unnatural (and therefore wrong if choice isn't involved?). Secondly, castration is a painful procedure that these hopeless pigs are forced to endure, just so that humans can eat them. Being on top of the food chain, or having a conscious brain, comes with so so many overlooked benefits, advantages that can make you sad or grateful depending on what kind of person you are. I don't claim to be any kind of vegetarian, but this is one among and endless list of instances of animal cruelty, and it happens to relate to my life.
