GoLean
2017

GoLean features a Dolly Parton drag performer whose happiness depends on a box of cereal. A response to the original and breathtaking ode, Jolene, this work questions the feminist nature of the song. Why does the power lie in the mistress rather than the protagonist, and why isn't the cheating man dismissed?

In this version, I sing to a cereal with a marketing strategy of weight loss - a food that is bland, dry, and unpleasant to the taste - a meal that keeps us thin. Can true happiness be obtained with an “attractive” body, from a relationship, or is it found somewhere else?

I view this performance as my coming out piece. The work addresses dissatisfaction with heteronormative coupling and presents a non-traditional alternative, one that can be found within queer relationships. My true desires are unconventional and disguised by the metaphors of consumption.
